TAKE A TOUR OF OUR NATURE-INSPIRED CLASSROOMS
The Outdoor Classroom
What was once “the rainforest” at Johnsonburg Camp and Retreat Center, will now serve as the outdoor classroom for Flourish Nature School. The outdoor classroom is located next to the Butterfly Garden and across from the Rec Center [where the indoor classroom is located.]
Here, we’ll learn our cardinal directions with the entry/exits of this space. We’ll make fabulous creations in the mud-kitchen. We’ll get dirty. We’ll paint. We’ll sing. We’ll dance. We’ll move our bodies freely. We’ll climb rocks. We’ll hug trees. We’ll have moments of stillness. We’ll play, observe, learn, create, explore and so much more! We’re so lucky to have this outdoor classroom at Johnsonburg. We cannot wait for it to grow and evolve over time, informed by the interests and desires of our students.

The Indoor Classroom
The indoor classroom is where we’ll begin each morning. This is where we’ll give our goodbye hugs to our families and settle into the school day with our wonderful teachers.
Each morning, our five centers will serve as invitations to play. We have a literacy center, math/science center, art center, loose parts/maker’s station center, and dramatic play center. Deeply rooted in the belief that environment greatly affects well-being, the classroom has been designed to be warm, inviting, and calming. We hope this indoor classroom environment serves as a source of inspiration for play, creation, and peace — for both children and adults alike!
The Johnsonburg Camp and Retreat Center Property
Ultimately, nature is our classroom, and Johnsonburg Camp and Retreat Center has over 300 acres to explore. While we’ll only be going as far as our walking feet can take us, you will also find us in Johnsonburg’s beautiful certified Butterfly Garden, picnicking, hiking a nature trail, swinging, observing the lake, jumping in puddles, running, climbing, and playing across Johnsonburg's bountiful campus. We will be on rocky terrain, uneven ground, balancing on logs, getting dirty, and navigating the fun obstacles nature gives us to help us learn and grow.
